Though Van Sant offered to screen the film for Nelson in its early stages, "I waited until I was sitting in the audience at the Cannes film festival" to see the movie, Nelson recalls. I was so overwhelmed that I started to cry."Like all his books, Nelson says, "Recovery Road" is about Portland high school- age kids. He first came up with the idea for a story about a teen- age girl whose drinking and drug use lands her in a sober living house, after visiting the grounds of the Springbrook center in Newberg, an alcohol and drug rehab facility that's part of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation. His friend had been a patient at Springbook, Nelson recalls, and the two stopped on their way to the beach. I based the facility in 'Recovery Road' on that.
I didn't actually go inside, but just being there triggered all of my friend's memories, and she told me all about it."In the "Recovery Road" TV series, Maddie Graham (played by Jessica Sula, whose previous work includes a role in the British series, "Skins") is a bright high- school student, whose "partying" hasn't interfered with her grades. But when she's discovered with a water bottle full of vodka at school, more of Maddie's alcohol and drug use is revealed. And she's placed in a coed sober living facility, which she leaves to attend school. The show doesn't focus on the behavior that put Maddie in the house, but it doesn't shy away from showing how easy it is for the rehab residents to relapse, despite the work of the staff, group therapy sessions, and the bonds that form between the housemates. The cast also includes Sebastian de Souza (also a veteran of "Skins") as another sober- house resident who Maddie is drawn to, even as she knows it's a bad idea to form a relationship when she should be working on her sobriety; Daniel Franzese ("Looking") and Kyla Pratt ("One on One") as fellow housemates; and Sharon Leal ("Grimm") as Maddie's mother. Getting book to TV was a process that took about three years, Nelson says.
Everybody was always telling me, 'Oh, don't get your hopes up, it's kind of a long shot,"" Nelson recalls. But I had a good feeling about it."Nelson, who lives in Hillsboro, says he's going to try to watch tonight's premiere broadcast of "Recovery Road." Several people have offered to host viewing parties for him, he says, but "I don't want to be in public when I watch it." Nelson doesn't know if this one will also make him cry, but it wouldn't be a surprise, since, as he says, "I cry at war movies, I cry at romantic comedies. Whenever I see something that's really well done, I just cry."After five years in Los Angeles, Nelson says his move back to the Portland area about a year- and- a- half ago has been a boost for his writing. He just signed a deal with Simon & Schuster for his latest novel. Nelson, who went to Jesuit High School in Beaverton, says his new book will be about "West Hills kids, like Lincoln kids."
