Russell Crowe as Dr. Jekyll is the big mystery factor here as the trailer for The Mummy suggest that hes very much a key element of the films narrative and not just a character who appears here, as setup for his own solo vehicle down the line. Instead, Jekyll appears to be quite knowledgable about Boutellas newly resurrected ancient princess not only who she is but also what shes after, having been sleeping for thousands of years by the time the film picks up. Right now, Bill Condons Bride of Frankenstein is set to be the next film in Universals Dark Universe cinematic universe, which may seem a little odd since there hasnt even been a Frankenstein movie. Its also a little odd because even though Bride of Frankenstein is amazing, the titular character plays a minor but memorable role in the overall plot. Its really good. If you look at the original Bride, its one of the weirdest movies ever made. Its truly a strange movie, and the Bride doesnt appear until the end of the film, and shes been built to be Frankensteins mate and takes one look at him and rejects him immediately. He gets so angry, he pulls a lever and the building explodes and thats the end of the movie, and youre like, I have no idea what just happened, but it was amazing Its fascinating to me that as a character with no dialogue for generation after generation after generation has been remembered. And I think shes been remembered for her defiance and remembered for independence. Shes certainly been remembered for her iconic look. And I love that and I think Bill is going to do something amazing with that. It seems that the idea with Bride is to take her few moments on screen and try to expand that into a character centered on defiance and independence. We still dont know what the plot will entail, but at least theres a clear idea of the central character taking shape. While I adore James Whales original movie, I definitely think theres room for a remake in terms of exploring the character in a way that hasnt been done before. Whereas the producers behind Dark Universe will have to strain to find new takes on the Mummy, Dracula, and Frankenstein, theres lots of open road when it comes to the Bride of Frankenstein.
